Backgound: An important advances in the definition of the associations between serum gamma glutamyltransferase (GGT) and risk of coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and stroke. People with high serum GGT have higher mortality. Collectively, these findings suggested a possible role for gamma-glutamyltrnsferase in the cellular processes of LDL oxidation and atherogenesis. GGT is a cell-surface protien contributing of to the extracellular catabolism of glutathione (GSH). The enzyme is procedures in many tissues, but mose GGT in seum is derived from the liver. GSH-dependent LDL oxiadation was similarly promoted by gamma-GT associated with the plasma membrane of human monoblastoid cells, and this process required iron traces that be found in advanced or late stage of atheromas. The objective of this study is to correlate GGT in coronary artery disease (CAD).
Methods: A total of 111 consecutive Filipino patient who underwent elective coronary angiogram were enrolled in which GGT levels was correlated for angiographic finding on the presence and severity of CAD.
Result: Age, male gender, smoking history, and hypertension were associated with CAD. GGT shows positive correlation (Spearman's rho, 0.237, p=0.012) to CAD.
Conclusion: GGT in novel marker of coronary artery disease among Filipinos.
