Objective : To determine the effect of Saluyot leaf decoction on 24 hour urinary volume and urinary sodium and compare it with the diuretic effect of Furosemide in rabbits.
Study Setting: Southwestern University - Matias H. Aznar Memorial College of Medicine
Study Population : Male white rabbits weighing 250-300 gms (n=65) randomly assigned to receive either saluyot leaf decoction (n=33) or furosemide (n=32).
Intervention : 20 ml of Saluyot leaf decoction and 20 mg Furosemide in 20 ml water administered daily for 7 days oral gavage.
Main Outcome Measures : Baseline 24-hour urinary sodium and urinary volume and repeat 24-hour urinary sodium and urinary volume measurements after 1 day and 7 days of continuous administration of Saluyot leaf decoction and furosemide.
Results : There was a significant increase in the mean 24-hour urinary sodium (88.1%) and urinary volume (59.9%) from baseline after 1 day of administration of saluyot leaf decoction. The mean 24-hour urinary sodium and urinary volume taken 1 day after administration of furosemide increased by 84% and 188.8% from baseline. respectively. The increase in both urinary sodium and urinary volume persisted with continuous dosing for 7 days though the effect size slightly decreased when compared with day 1. The magnitude of the natriuretic effect of saluyot leaf decoction was similar to that of furosemide while the increase in urinary volume after saluyot leaf decoction was markedly less when compared with the increase in urinary volume noted after furosemide administration.
Conclusion : Saluyot leaf decoction results to diuresis and natriuresis when given orally to rabbits. The natriuretic effect was similar to that of furosemide while the increase in urinary volume was less than that seen after furosemide.
