There were total of 20 patients initially enrolled in the study. However 7 of these patients were dropped due to the lost in the follow-up. Thirteen (13) subjects were included in the final study, 5 of which was assigned to Steroid and 8 to Verapamil. The ages of the patients ranges from 17 to 43 years old. The mean age for the Steroid groups is 25.6 (+- 10.55) and for the Verapamil group the mean age is 27.5(+-10.27). Sex and age of the scar and the type of burn are well distributed in both treatment groups. The size of the scar decreased by 1.5 cms3. after intralesional injection to 6 Verapamil doses which showed to be statistically significant with a p value of 0.047. Likewise the scores for itchiness, consistency and pain also decrease by 15,12.3, and 18.75 respectively from baseline reading which is also statistically significant with a p value 0.05. Both groups of Steroid and Verapamil were both effective in decreasing the size of the scar at 0.54 and 1.5 cms3 respectively. No defference was seen from the steroid and Verapamil group. Both treatment groups also were able to decrease scores in itchiness, consistency and pain. However these changes were not significant comparing both the treatment groups with a p value 0.05. Side effects like hypotension or bradycardia was not seen in the Verapamil group except for 1 patient who developed allergic reaction immediately after intralesional injection of Verapamil developing petechiae, warmness and swelling at the vicinity of the scar which was immediately reverse by giving antihistamine in the form of Benadryl tablet.This patient however was able to finished the course of therapy. Skin atrophy was noted in one patient in the Steroid group as thinning of the skin and paleness of color. Patients in both treatment groups complained of mild pain during injection of Verapamil and Steroid which usually disappears after a few hours.
General Objectives: To determine the efficacy and safety of intralesional verapamil therapy for the treatment of scars secondary to burns.Specific Objectives:1. To determine the percentage reduction in the size and change in consistency of the scar after intralesional injection of Verapamil (2.5 mg/ml) up to maximum of 2.5 mg every 2 weeks for a period of 3 months as compared to steroids injection consisting of Triamcinolone acetonide (10mg/ml) up to maximum of 100mg.2. To determine the decrease in itchiness as well as pain at the site of scar among patients using Verapamil vs Steroid.3. To determine the frequency of side effects among patients who receive intralesional Verapamil vs Steroid.
